A Calming App Experience for Better Mental Health
Wavecare, hailing from Denmark, is renowned for its ambient solutions tailored for global hospitals, particularly in maternity and psychiatric wards. They ingeniously weave together elements of light, sound, color, and scenic imagery to alleviate patients' stress and anxiety. Building on this foundation, Wavecare approached us to develop a new version of their mobile app, Wavecare Me, aimed to support psychiatric patients beyond their hospital stay. Focusing on simplicity, and intuitiveness, this app guides users towards relaxation and offers exclusive access to Wavecare's distinctive music-video materials and resources.
Wavecare's pioneering app uniquely continues patient care post-discharge, distinguishing the company in the non-medical hospital solutions sector. However, this standout feature faced its hurdles.
From Wavecare's perspective, the existing app's rigid codebase hampered enhancements and UI modernization. Thus, our collaborative solution was a completely new app built from scratch. Our focus extended beyond mere aesthetics and functionality. We prioritized crafting an environment free from distractions and overstimulation, nurturing a sense of calm for its users.
Additionally, Wavecare faced challenges with secure content delivery when using Vimeo. By shifting to direct streaming from their cloud, we fortified content security and improved the quality of the user experience.
In a synergistic effort with the Wavecare team, we architected a brand-new app, focusing on its core functionalities and design. Collaborating closely with Wavecare’s backend developer, we achieved secure and fluid video streaming directly from their infrastructure. We chose to retain the QR code-based access system from the previous version, preserving the app's exclusivity for psychiatric ward patients familiar with Wavecare technology. The next step was the integration and testing of a feature for tracking user engagement, essential for Wavecare to discern which themes most effectively comfort and engage users, thereby informing the creation of more soothing content.
Throughout the redevelopment process, which spanned 5 weeks, our communication with Wavecare was frequent and transparent, focusing on fulfilling their vision and high standards. Notably, the final 2 weeks of development were dedicated to a TestFlight phase, where the Wavecare team had the opportunity to extensively test the app and its functionalities. This phase was crucial for fine-tuning the app.
The cross-platform capabilities of the app were achieved using leading-edge technologies like Expo, EAS, and React Native, ensuring a high-quality user experience across multiple devices.
Our partnership with Wavecare yielded a brand-new, user-centric app. Enhanced multi-language support ensures that the app is accessible in countries already touched by Wavecare's innovative solution. New data collection functionalities enable continuous refinement of content that resonates deeply with users' needs for tranquility. Moreover, the transition to direct streaming from Wavecare’s infrastructure, combined with an enriched user experience, underscores Wavecare's commitment to providing cutting-edge, user-focused solutions.
